FSFU brings together social workers, nurses, community-based field officers and other committed individuals working to address the health, social, educational and economic challenges experienced by families affected by Sickle Cell Disease.FSFU is also a member of the Sickle Cell Alliance Uganda (SCAU).

Our Foundation

Who We Are

Friends Sickle Cell Foundation Uganda (FSFU) is a registered community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of children, individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease.

Founded in 2020 by Umar Matovu, a Clinical Officer, FSFU began as a grassroots initiative driven by compassion and community need.

The organization formally registered in 2022, creating a stronger foundation for structured and sustainable programming.

FSFU brings together social workers, nurses, community-based field officers and other committed individuals working to address the health, social, educational and economic challenges experienced by families affected by Sickle Cell Disease.

FSFU is also a member of the Sickle Cell Alliance Uganda (SCAU).

OUR FOUNDER

Umar Matovu

Founder, Friends Sickle Cell Foundation Uganda

Umar Matovu is a clinician and community health advocate who founded Friends Sickle Cell Foundation Uganda in 2020.

His journey was influenced by witnessing the devastating impact of health challenges in his community and developing a strong commitment to protecting vulnerable people.

Rather than focusing only on clinical care, Umar envisioned an organization that would address the broader realities faced by families affected by Sickle Cell Disease—including healthcare, education, psychosocial wellbeing and economic vulnerability.

Through FSFU, he has brought together a team committed to compassionate care, community-based action and evidence-informed programming.

MISSION

To advocate for children living with Sickle Cell Disease and their caregivers, ensuring that their rights are respected and their health and care needs are supported and managed.

VISION

A future where people living with Sickle Cell Disease and their caregivers experience improved health, wellbeing and living conditions and build self-reliant, sustainable households.

Understanding Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body.

Normally, red blood cells are flexible and round. In people with Sickle Cell Disease, abnormal haemoglobin can cause red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped.

These cells can block blood flow through small blood vessels, resulting in painful episodes and other complications.

Sickle cells also break down more quickly than normal red blood cells, which can lead to anaemia.

Sickle Cell Disease is inherited. It is not contagious.
